CRICKETS.....
I don't know about you, but these first two weeks have been, let's just say, villainously pleasing. "Cue Jack Torrance's laugh from the Shining". With all due respect to Stephenville, it was very quiet in the stands amongst the Yellowjackets fans, who had their wings clipped against the Tiger Powerhouse. By no means am I a trash talker. I don't care for it, but man was it nice to see us dominate the #1 ranked 4A Div 1 in scrimmage. We are usually on the other end of the beatin' stick, so it was nice to hear the crickets chirp down in Waco.
I am neutral in terms of opinion about the Lorena Leopards. Thursday was the first time so far that anyone has scored on us, resulting from a missed tackle by a defensive back. But hey, I'll take it. Offense managed to score consistently, with the live quarter resulting in a 14-7 outcome. I wish nothing but the best year for Lorena and Stephenville.
There has been considerable talk this year about our offense. We definitely have an arsenal of superheroes. Canyon Evans has the art of feeling the pressure around him and moving around the pocket with such ease. I even seen a time or two of him taking a gallop into the open field. Don't leave out those wide receivers, with Groeneweg, Sanchez, Andress, and Bowman all being huge threats. I bet ole' Coach Watkins is daring other teams to play tight on Josiah. Game on for the other high-flying ballers. It's going to be a hard time for opponents to figure out how to stop these guys, especially those beasts upfront. Them big boys know how to handle themselves, giving Canyon that ability in the pocket. Anderson, Gray, Pillow, Ghazal, and Alexander will eat you up and spit you out. All of them are great guys, but good luck making friends on Friday Night. These boys are the core of this offense and not a single pass or run will be made without them and their ability to protect. Don't ever forget that foundation!
Let's talk about what wins championships though. I said it against Stephenville/Connally, and I said it against Lorena. "That Defense Though!!" Sprinkle some holy water and call the priest, cause that defense is wicked! Talk about putting together a unit of boys that fly to the ball and execute the game of football. I know, I know I am a little biased because that #33 is either going to be upfront on D-Line or a step back at Linebacker, but geez these boys have it figured out. There may be a few tweaks here and there, but when you can consistently deny first down territory over and over, force fumbles consecutively, and open field tackle one on one; "turn out the lights boys, it's in the bag." I get them duck bumps when I think about how fun it will be to watch these boys play. Don't think you're just coming to watch offense score and take the glory; you're going to witness a defensive squad of ferocious mammals eat up opponents all night long.
I may be a little excited; a little too early. However, who doesn't want the best out of these boys and see them reach their goal. It's going to be exciting this year. Stay healthy, stay humble, and keep climbing!
